What is PM Jan Dhan Yojana?
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is India’s national financial inclusion mission launched on 28 August 2014. It gives every Indian household access to a zero-balance savings account along with a RuPay debit card, accident insurance, overdraft facility, and access to all government DBT transfers.
The scheme ensures no citizen is left without a bank account — especially women, rural households, and people who never had access to formal banking before.
Who is Eligible?
- Any Indian citizen aged 10 years or above
- No income limit, no caste requirement, no minimum balance
- Even if you already have a bank account elsewhere, you can open a Jan Dhan account at a different bank
- Special focus on women, rural households, and first-time bank users
✓ No documents? You can still open a Small Account valid for 12 months using only a self-certified photograph. Upgrade to a full account once you have Aadhaar or any government ID.
How to Open a Jan Dhan Account
- Visit any bank branch or Bank Mitra (BC)
All nationalised banks, regional rural banks, and Bank Mitras in villages accept PMJDY applications. No appointment needed. - Ask for the PMJDY account opening form
The form is free. Fill in your name, address, Aadhaar number, and nominee details. - Submit your KYC document
Aadhaar is preferred for same-day processing. Biometric verification may be done on the spot at the branch. - Account activated same day or in 2–3 days
Your account number and passbook are issued immediately. Your RuPay debit card arrives by post within 10–15 days. - Link Aadhaar for DBT
After opening, link your Aadhaar to start receiving PM-KISAN, MGNREGA wages, LPG subsidy, and all other government payments directly.
