How to Check Your Ration Card Status
- Visit your state's Food Department website
Search "[your state] ration card status check" to find the official portal. - Enter your application number or Aadhaar number
Your status — pending, approved, or rejected — will be shown. - Check on the National Food Security Portal
Visit nfsa.gov.in → "Ration Card" → select your state to see beneficiary lists and your entitlement.
If Ration is Denied or Short
- Demand a signed receipt from the Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealer every time you collect ration — showing quantity given and date.
- Call the State Food Helpline — every state has a toll-free helpline for ration complaints.
- File complaint on pgportal.gov.in — the official Public Grievances portal. Select "Department of Food and Public Distribution" as the ministry.
- File an RTI at your District Food Office asking for your entitlement records and transaction history.
- Approach the District Grievance Redressal Officer (DGRO) — mandated under NFSA, must reply within 30 days.
⚠️ Aadhaar authentication failure: If the biometric machine at the FPS fails to read your fingerprint, the dealer must still give you ration using an alternate authentication method (OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile). They cannot refuse ration due to a machine error.
Add / Remove Family Members
- New birth: Add newborn within 1 year — visit your Tehsil/Block food office with birth certificate and Aadhaar.
- Marriage: Bride can be added to husband's card or get a new card — depends on state rules.
- Death: Remove deceased member from card within 3 months — required to avoid fraud flags.
- Migration: Surrender your card and apply fresh in new state, or use One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) to collect ration anywhere in India on your existing card.
✅ One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) — If you migrate to another state for work, you can collect your entitled ration at any Fair Price Shop in India using your Aadhaar card. You do not need to surrender your home-state ration card.
